The Cass River Encampment at Frankemuth was a great success! Trish took some pictures and has them up at Photobucket (choose from Civilians or Soldiers). A slideshow of her Soldier and battle photos are shown at the bottom.

Anything you can tell me about Samuel Thaxter (1723-1774) of Hingham, Mass.?
He was a Major in the French & Indian War under Col. Joseph Fry at Fort William Henry.
The Major escaped (1757) from the fort and made his way to Fort Edward.
There are two versions of his escape:(1) He was stripped and tied to a tree, presumably to be burned at the stake. He appealed, as a fellow commissioned officer,to two French officers.
One cut him loose.
(2) A family oral version is that the Major, a Freemason, appealed in distress to a French officer, also a Freemason. That officer cut the rope. Any additions, corrections, etc. appreciated.
Samuel is 5th generation; I am 12th.- Thomas E. Thaxter.

(1) How was this escape effected ?
(2) What is the second version of the escape – and was he duly and truly prepared for it ?
